Houses Of Parliament Trip  January 2026

On Wednesday this week, Mr Bostock and Mrs Tomsa took the 12 members of our School Council on an exciting and educational trip to the Houses of Parliament. This trip followed the previous learning we did in “Parliament Week” in November 2025. The visit was a special opportunity for council members to learn more about how the country is governed and to see first-hand where important decisions are made.

The day began with our coach journey to London. Once we arrived at the Houses of Parliament, we were impressed by the size and beauty of the historic building. We learned that the Palace of Westminster is very old and has been the home of the UK Parliament for many years

.

During the visit, the School Council took part in a guided tour. We explored key areas of the building, including the House of Commons and the House of Lords. We even got to go through the ‘Royal Gate’ which even our Prime Minister is not allowed through! The guide explained the roles of Members of Parliament and Lords, and how laws are debated and passed. The children listened carefully and asked thoughtful questions, showing a great interest in how democracy works. Many were fascinated by the ‘Parliamentary Ping Pong’!

The children also discovered how school councils are similar to Parliament, as both give people the chance to share ideas, represent others, and help make decisions.

Adam (5A) said “I loved it so much. I have been looking forward to it all week. I learnt so many things: that the UK is divided into 650 constituencies, and David Taylor is our MP”

The visit helped the School Council understand how their own role in school links to the wider democratic process in the country. It encouraged them to think about responsibility, leadership, and respect for different opinions. The children represented the school excellently, behaving responsibly and showing maturity throughout the day. The trip ended with a picnic lunch in the sun sitting on benches overlooking the River Thames.

Junior (6H) said “I like that you got to see the king’s robe room and the throne. I also saw the House of Lords, which has red leather benches. Did you know that Lords are specialists who are elected to help make laws?”

Overall, the trip to the Houses of Parliament was a memorable and valuable experience. It helped bring learning to life and inspired the School Council to continue working hard to represent their classmates and make positive changes within the school
