Termly Update
Summer 1
Well – the SATs came, the SATs went and every child tried their hardest and behaved impeccably so I personally couldn’t be prouder of them!
Thankfully, apart from the cramming of arithmetic, reasoning, reading comprehension and SpaG terminology, we managed to get some fun things done too!
In Geography, 6 Hawthorn learnt about a coastal environment and compared it to Hemel Hempstead, whilst 6 Sycamore spent some time contrasting leisure and entertainment from the Victorians era to modern day in History. These will be reversed in Summer 2 so neither class miss out.
In Science, we learnt about adaptation and evolution and found out about Charles Darwin and why he is such an important person in British society.
In English, we wrote poems about making a change, a balanced argument about an issue that caught our attention and a biography about a person who inspired us. We also had a visit from Laura Noakes, the author of our most recent guided reading text, Cosima Unfortunate, which the children really enjoyed.
In art, we created collages using a range of materials and will create a memory board in the final half term that will use the techniques that they have been learning.
We finished the half term, with a day out; Year 6 children were invited by The University of Hertfordshire to their Bayfordbury Campus for a day of outdoor learning. Activities included: bugs and mini-beast exploring, poetry in the landscape, grow your own, art from nature (Andy Goldsworthy), clay pottery and much more! The campus is a beautiful site of biodiversity. The event is designed not only to bring learning from inside the classroom to life, but also to support children’s understanding and to enable them to connect to nature. This is pivotal in supporting positive health and wellbeing in our young people.
The children were well behaved and responsible ambassadors of the school on the visit.
We will look forward to their final half term at Yewtree and wonder how we will fit in a leavers production, a leavers assembly, a residential trip, transition visits to and from their secondary schools… oh and some more learning of course!
Spring 2
As we have moved through the spring term, year 6 have started to focus more on their upcoming SAT’s and transition to secondary school. Working hard and looking forward to some exciting times ahead.
As a class we have had the pleasure of reading Cosima, and we look forward to the author visit in the summer term.
In Maths, we have been looking at Ratio, co-ordinates and angles.
History has been an enjoyable topic for us, looking at the ancient Egyptians and how they used to live.
During English lessons, we have explored and compared many fairy tales, finishing with us creating our own.
The end of a busy, long yet successful term in Year 6.
The children enjoyed reading the class text ‘Letters from a Lighthouse’ and hearing about what life during World War II would have been like for children evacuated. They also enjoyed writing and performing their persuasive speech banishing items to Room 101.
The children also completed a mock SATS week in preparation for May and I hope they found it beneficial to see what they need to know by the end of the year.
As we approached Christmas, they enjoyed performing in the Carol Service at St Marys and making lots of craft during their Deco Days.
