Termly Update
Autumn 2
It’s been an action packed half term for year 4. We learnt about Ancient Greek special ships called triremes, learnt to spell our names using Ancient Greek letters, discovered which Ancient city school we would prefer to go to and compared school with today. We built out knowledge of the UK, found out about land use patterns and explored the outstanding Lake District national park.
For maths, we were privileged to welcome Hertfordshire University experts to teach us about coordinates. In science, we made many observations and found out about the water cycle, evaporation and condensation and many other interesting things about states of matter.
We read Varjak Paw and are getting mesmerised by the Demon Headmaster.
Year 4 worked tremendously hard learning Christmas carols for the end of year concert with fantastic performances from all, including performers and narrators who worked hard to learn their lines. The concert was the start of a festive end of term week, which has been a lovely end to a thrilling half term. We were very proud of our Christmas stockings and got stuck in making calendars, hats, decorations and cards.
Autumn 1
The first half term in Year 4 has been full of wonderful learning across all areas. In English, the children immersed themselves in creating their own challenge for Arthur, inspired by Arthur and the golden rope, free verse and speeches. Their engagement resulted in them all producing excellent final outcomes.
In Science, they focused on the human digestive system. The children delighted in taking part in various experiments, identified the main organs and described their functions, explained the process of digestion from start to finish, and explored how food is broken down and nutrients are absorbed. The children also examined the role of teeth in digestion, and how the body gets the energy it needs to function and stay healthy. Finally, they learnt to present information in a variety of ways from writing a song to creating slide shows and models.
Year 4 thrived on the opportunity to participate in a cross-country event. They learnt to improve physical fitness, set and achieved personal goals, developed sportsmanship, and showed school pride and camaraderie.
In Geography children visited the Lake District, one of the most beautiful places in the world, and learned about the United Kingdom.
Another highlight was creating a dragon’s eye and producing some fine dragon eye drawings.
