Termly Update
Summer 1
During the first half of the Summer term, Reception have been finding out about different types of animals and where we would find them. We have been working very hard to develop the garden area, deciding which plants we would like to grow and taking turns to water our seedlings.
In Literacy, we have learnt about the different types of pets people can have in their homes after reading Six Dinner Sid. When reading What the Ladybird heard we found out about farm animals and turned our garden area into a stable, holding horse races around the track.
In Maths, we have continued working on finding the total of a pair of objects working with different partners to combine towers of cubes. We have been learning our doubles to 5 using the doubles rap which we can now sing without the music.
We enjoyed learning about St George’s Day at the end of April, exploring the dragons, the St George cross and designing our own dragons. We also had fun celebrating VE day, making planes, decorating bunting and colouring flags to wave. We even looked at black and white pictures of people celebrating from 80 years ago.

Spring 2
This half term, Reception have been busy learning a range of traditional stories to help develop their vocabulary. We turned the garden into the Three Little Pigs’ houses and have enjoyed watching the children taking turns to be the wolf and ‘blowing down’ the houses.
In Literacy, we have been reading Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Gingerbread Man. We have been very busy making puppets to help us retell the story and planting bean seeds to see if a giant will come and visit us.
In Maths, we have been working on finding one more or less than a group of objects and counting forwards and backwards to 10 on a number line. We have also used our number line to help us put numbers in order from smallest to largest.
We really enjoyed celebrating Pancake Day, decorating and eating our own pancakes as well as taking part in pancake races. We have made delicious fruit kebabs, practicing our cutting skills.
This half term, Reception have been very busy with their crafts to develop their fine motor skills. We celebrated Diwali and Bonfire night by making diwa lamps and firework pictures. We then used printing to make red and purple poppies to remember both the people and animals that fought in the war.
In Literacy we have been reading Supertato, Handa’s Surprise and Oliver’s vegetables. We were very excited about the evil pea who kept making an appearance during lunch time. We also used potatoes to make our very own Supertato’s.
In Maths we have been ordering objects by their size and working on continuing repeated patterns. We have also been busy sorting resources by colour and type.
We enjoyed the brief spell of snow and used this to inspire our snowman pictures with chalk. We have been very busy making Christmas pictures using paint, felt tip pens and colouring pencils.
