Termly Update

Summer 1

This half term we have been learning about letter writing using the book Paddington’s post. We looked at the different features of them before writing our own. In maths we have been learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and looked at sharing equally.

Our topic in Geography this half term has been the polar regions. We looked at the flora and fauna in both the Arctic and Antarctic.

In science we learnt about sorting and classifying animal groups. We also learnt what a carnivore, herbivore and omnivore are.

In art we looked at the artist Matisse before creating our own masterpieces based on his famous picture ‘the snail’.

In PE we have been developing our jumping skills, learning different jumps, and developing our bat and ball skills.

This half term has flown by, and we look forward to our last half term in Year 1.

Spring 2

The past half term flew by, and we anticipate Summer 1 going even quicker! This term, we have been learning all about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole in History. It was great to remember their inspiring work and compare Victorian nursing to nursing today. As part of this topic, we visited the National Army Museum to consolidate this learning. In English, we focused on a whole school text ‘Hermelin’. We have also been looking at narrative writing based on a journey.   In PE, we played many games and learnt a variety of ball skills. In Maths, we have been learning about addition and subtraction as well as money. In DT, we have made our own moving pictures using lever mechanisms, lever and pivot mechanisms and wheel mechanisms. We have worked very hard and are looking forward to the summer term.

Spring 1

We have enjoyed some fun and interesting topics this term. In English we have been exploring different stories and completing a range of different activities based on them such as ‘Stanley’s Stick’, Ruby’s Worry’ and ‘Oi Frog!’ In maths we have been learning about number. (addition and subtraction, doubles and halves). In Geography we looked the four counties in the United Kingdom and we had so much fun junk modelling famous landmarks in art! In PE we have been practising our ball skills and moving like a gymnastic.  It has been a wonderful half term. Well done to all of the children.

Autumn 2

This half term we have enjoyed learning about Guy Fawkes and the gun powder plot and learnt why we celebrate bonfire night. We have read lots of books and particularly enjoyed reading different traditional tales.

In maths we have explored different methods of addition and subtraction and can use lots of different resources to show our working out. In DT we have learnt how to cut and prepare a variety of fruits to make our own fruit kebabs and used our computing skills to record ourselves like TV chefs.  In RE we have learnt about why Christmas matters to Christians. In science we have been learning about our materials.

Near the end of the term we turned our attention to our Christmas play ‘Hey Ewe’ and learnt lots of songs and dances.
