Termly Update

Autumn 2

Year 3 have had an excellent start to this school year and settled back into the routine of school well. The pupils have demonstrated positive attitudes to learning and have made some seriously strong progress across the curriculum during the autumn term.

In English, the children have looked at several texts and have been able to create their own fable, teaching their readers a valuable life lesson, their own narrative based on a focus text, poetry where they created their own magic box and finally a non-chronological report based on their own dream job. There has been steady development in spelling, grammar, and the use of a wide range of adventurous vocabulary, which is increasingly evident in their written work.

Mathematics lessons have focused on strengthening key foundational skills such as addition, subtraction, and place value. These essential skills are enabling pupils to apply their learning confidently across different areas of mathematics and in real-life contexts.

Science learning has been both engaging and practical, with pupils exploring a variety of rocks and soils and looking how there are formed and transported. They have also looked at humans and animals and how their skeletal structures are similar and different. They were also lucky enough to have some wonderful people come from the university of Herts where they were able to look at different roles within science and were able to create straw rockets.

In Design and Technology, pupils looked at different mechanisms for pop up books and were able to create some ready for them to create their own pop-up books. Art lessons have concentrated on portrait drawing and different sketching and colouring techniques and how to blend colours which the children were able to use in the high-quality final outcomes.

We are extremely proud of the progress Year 3 have made this term and look forward to seeing them continue to thrive and succeed in the Spring term.

Autumn 1

We have started year 3 with some great enthusiasm for this big step in the children’s education.

In English we have looked at Mini Rabbit Not lost and the children have rewritten and written their own version of it, allowing their creatures to go on an exciting and dangerous adventure and finishing their stories with an exciting and surprising ending. We have also been able to look at poetry and two poems, Words are ours and The magic box, and the children were able to create not one, but two poems based on the Magic box and were able to share some of their special memories and items with the class and teachers.

In maths we have looked at number and place value, learning how to partition and flexibly regroup numbers up to one thousand. We then moved on to estimating and rounding, which is a lot trickier, but the children built on their resilience and were able to overcome the challenges and succeed. We then moved onto mental strategies for adding a variety of different numbers. We will be moving onto mental strategies for subtraction after the break.

For geography we have looked at Europe and the children were able to compare London and Paris and they were quite surprised at how similar, yet how different they are – especially with the food! They were able to link capitals to their countries and see how different countries keep their individuality by looking at their flags, currency and democracy 0 the children were surprised to find out how many European countries have royal families.

In science, we have looked at rocks and soils and the children were able to get some practical experiences being geologists and comparing porosity and hardness of different rocks as well as looking at how rocks are used in everyday situations. Many children didn’t realise that we have rocks in things such as toothpaste!

The children have all done us exceptionally proud throughout this half term and were impeccably behaved for cross country, again building on their resilience and team work. They all did Yewtree proud! They have also enjoyed their sessions with Commando Alex, working on their communication and teamwork skills as well as our other focus of mindfulness where they understood that physical and mental fitness is important for developing onto well rounded individuals as well as learning skills to help calm the body and mind in different situations.

We are all very proud of how well the children have settled back into school life and routines and look forward to having more incredible work and progress over the next term.
