Year One - Willow and Chestnut
Spring 1
We have enjoyed some fun and interesting topics this term. In English we have been exploring different stories and completing a range of different activities based on them such as ‘Handa’s Surprise’, ‘Mr Post mouse’ and ‘The last noo-noo’. In maths we have been learning about number. (addition and subtraction, doubles and halves). We had so much fun junk modelling famous landmarks in art! In PE we have been practising our ball skills and moving like a gymnastic. It has been a wonderful half term. Well done to all of the children.
Autumn 2
This half term we have enjoyed learning about Guy Fawkes and the gun powder plot and learnt why we celebrate bonfire night. We have read lots of books and particularly enjoyed reading ‘Traction Man’ and ‘Man on the Moon (A Day in the life of Bob).’ In maths we have explored different methods of addition and subtraction and can use lots of different resources to show our working out. In DT we have learnt how to cut and prepare a variety of fruits to make our own fruit kebabs and used our computing skills to record ourselves like TV chefs. In RE we have learnt all about different festivals of light including Diwali, Hannukah and Christmas. In science we have been learning about our bodies. We learnt about the 5 senses and found out lots of interesting facts. Did you know babies have a sense of smell before they are born. Also you can not smell while asleep.
Near the end of the term we turned our attention to our Christmas play ‘Don’t be afraid’ and learnt lots of songs.
Autumn 1st Half
This half-term we have enjoyed learning about our local area in geography. We looked at maps and aerial photos of the school grounds and created our own maps of the school.
In English we enjoyed reading Stanley’s stick and Farmer Duck . We have also been learning about instruction using the book Gruffalo crumble as a stimulus. In maths we have been learning about position and direction before moving on to exploring numbers to 10. In art we have been learning about portraits and have experimented with poster paint and watercolours. We created our own versions of ‘the girl with the pearl earring’ and ‘Mona Lisa’. In PE we have improved our ball skills. In RE we have been learning about different faiths and their festivals. We took part in celebrating harvest festival and enjoyed singing with the rest of our key stage.
We also had a visit from Electric Umbrella who came in to visit the whole school and remind us ‘there’s no such thing as normal’.
