Year One - Willow and Chestnut
Spring 1
We have had a fantastic time in year 1 across all areas of learning! We have been on a fruit hunt to support with our writing based on the book Handa’s Surprise, learnt a dance routine and even choreographed our own short pieces in groups. Something we especially enjoyed was making our very own famous land marks out of recycling and we had lots of fun learning about baptism and acting out a ceremony. We look forward to having lots more fun learning in spring 2.

Autumn Term 2

This half term, Year 1 have been working really hard in English looking at the texts Mr Big, One Silver Speck and Blue Penguin. The children in year 1 have really enjoyed working on their writing, especially with Blue Penguin. Our focus in English has been using capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and using ‘and’ and we have done so well with this recently.
In maths we have looked a lot at adding and subtracting, using the part whole model and comparing values. We have been working on using lots of different resources to deepen understanding.
In science we really enjoyed finding out all about the different body parts we have and which body parts are associated with which senses. We enjoyed going on a listening walk around the school, smelling and tasting different flavoured crisps and touching lots of things like cooked spaghetti and jelly.
We also really loved making smoothies in D&T, exploring creating shaped with our bodies in gymnastics and learning all about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot.
We are looking forward to learning lots more next half term!
Autumn Term 1

We have really enjoyed building relationships with the children in year 1 this half term and getting to know them all. We have had lots of fun so far and we have been learning about so many new things.
In English, we have looked at the books Farmer Duck, Stanley’s Stick and Gruffalo Crumble. We really enjoyed imagining our own adventures that we would have with a stick of our own, just like Stanley did. Based on the text Gruffalo Crumble, we spent some time learning to follow instructions for recipes. We made Terrible Tusks and Deep Dark Dips together; they tasted delicious! We have now written our own set of instructions to make something tasty, like cupcakes and pizza!
In maths, we have been focusing on adding and subtracting numbers within ten and using the cherry model. We can now write number sentences using the add, minus and equals symbols. We can also talk about our maths learning using lots of different mathematical vocabulary.
We have really enjoyed exploring materials in our science lessons this half tern. We mostly enjoyed sorting materials based on their properties, playing materials ‘I Spy’ and making our own ice cream.
In art, we have been looking at different artists representations of portraits and how different artists use different media. We used these artists to inspire our own self-portraits. We enjoyed using the water colours to paint ourselves the most!
We really loved using Bee Bots in computing too. We had to create an algorithm to move the Bee Bot to a certain place.
We really appreciate all of the support you have given us so far, and a special thank you to everyone that has been engaging with home learning and reading at home.
After a very successful first half-term, we are really looking forward to the next one!
