Year Three - Beech and Cedar
Summer 1
Summer 1 went by in a flash with all the bank holidays and King Charles’ coronation! We cannot believe we only have one half term left with the children in Year 3. In English we flew around the world collecting stamps for our passport before writing river poems and playscripts based on The Twits. In Maths we have developed our independency while learning new concepts and methods. In Computing we have created and edited our own Wiki pages while in PE we have developed our athletics skills in preparation for sports day. In Geography we learnt about the features and benefits of rivers. In Music we explored 3 notes as we composed our own music. In French we have learnt the names of body parts while enjoying Petite Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood). In RE we have explored sacred texts, their stories and what they mean to people of faith. During our PSHE lessons we have discussed relationships while in Art we have developed our watercolour skills while painting waterfalls.
Whilst we enjoyed sharing our classroom with all parents/carers when crafting and celebrating the coronation our best bit from Summer 1 has to be our STEM workshop where we became geologists and sports technicians. We all loved digging for rocks and using the thermal cameras.
Spring 2
We blinked and Spring was over! The children have now completed 2/3 of Year 3 and they continue to thrive. In English we explored Africa Amazing Africa along with the other year groups as our Explore and Engage unit before becoming experts in everything pirate. We are very proud of our double page spreads. In Maths we have developed our strategies for addition and subtraction. In Computing we celebrated who we are creating Google slides about our earliest memories, hobbies and interests. In PE we have developed our ball skills whilst working in a team to play dodgeball. In History we built our knowledge of the Stone Age as we learnt about The Bronze Age and Iron Age. In our Science lessons we used our scientific skills to observe, filter, identify, classify and research. In Music we explored Latin dance, The March of the Nutcracker and we continued to develop our recorder skills on Friday mornings. In French we have learnt the names of 10 fruits and how to say ‘I like/don’t like’ the fruits to build on our conversational skills. In RE we have explored sacred spaces and prayers including designing a place of worship to demonstrate our knowledge and understanding. During our PSHE lessons we discussed how healthy we were and what healthy means. In our DT lessons we thoroughly enjoyed observing, designing and creating photo frames.
Our best bit from Spring 2 include the Sublime Science workshop where 3 Cedar made sherbet, 3 Beech explored forces and we all made our own slime.
Spring 1
Spring 1 flew by so quickly we cannot believe it is half term already. It may have been quick but we squeezed a lot in. In English we explored free verse poetry and traditional tales linked to The Finger Eater. In Maths we have developed our mental strategies for addition and subtraction. In Computing we became presenters, filming and editing our own green screen presentations about Yewtree. In PE we have built our fitness levels and developed our dancing skills whilst exploring a range of music genres from classical to afrobeats. In Geography we learnt about settlements and how to read and create 4 and 6 figure grid references. In Music we explored Latin music whilst building on our team skills and on Friday mornings we continued to learn different notes on the recorders. In Science we have explored rocks and fossils. In French we have learnt the names of many instruments and how to say ‘I play the’ to build on our conversational skills. In RE we have explored the big questions linked to belonging and in PSHE we have discussed our hopes and dreams. We have all enjoyed building on our new history knowledge from Autumn 2 to create Stone Age cave paintings.
Our best bits from Spring 1 include playing songs including Baby Shark on the recorders, creating settlement dioramas in Geography and our visit from The University of Hertfordshire to discuss careers in STEM. As always we look forwards to the adventures Spring 2 will bring.
Autumn 2
Year 3 had a fun filled Autumn 2. In English we explored fables and fairy tales before using our knowledge of fables to create our moving story books in Design Technology. In Maths we continued to develop our understanding of number, place value and number magnitude before moving on to measure. In Computing we became debuggers and fixed a range of different bugs. We became gymnasts in PE and after recapping our Year 2 skills we developed our cartwheel and handstand skills. In History we explored the Stone Age learning about their tools, animals and the settlement of Skara Brae. In Science we explore forces and magnets before finishing the topic making bottle magnet mazes. In Music we learnt a new song, wrote our own song and learnt the note A, B and C on the recorder. In French we learnt the names of 10 different animals. In PSHE we have been celebrating differences and in RE we have been exploring the differences between different religious celebrations and traditions.
Our best bits of Autumn 2 half term include creating our moving story books and walking to St. Mary’s Church to sing with our families and friends. We are really looking forward to continuing our recorder lessons in the Spring term and exploring new topics.
Autumn 1
Autumn 1 for Year 3 meant a transition to LKS2 and new routines. The children have impressed us with their resilience and hard work.
Our English lessons have allowed us to explore some lovely picture books including The Paperbag Princess, Dr Xargle's book of Earth Hounds and Mini Rabbit Not Lost whilst our end of day whole class reading has taught us how to grow dragons. In Maths, we have worked at the children's pace to explore place value, counting on and back in 1s, 10s and 100s.
In Art lessons the children have explored different media when creating self-portraits and portraits. During RE lessons, we have learnt about symbolic expressions and explored the similarities and differences between the major religions. PE lessons have allowed us to learn new skills in Tri Golf as well as building on our Hockey Skills with the Sporting Kids coaches. Geography lessons have allowed us to explore Europe and our French lessons have allowed us to learn greetings, colours and numbers in French. In Music lessons we have explored pentatonic ostinatos, making music with cups and a range of instruments whilst learning I've Been to Harlem. Computing lessons have allowed us to retell a joke through animation on Scratch. Do you know "What time an astronaut eats?" .... "Launch time!". PSHE lessons have allowed us to celebrate being me in my world and Science lessons have allowed us to learn more about animals and our bodies as we learnt about skeletons and muscles.
Can you spot your children or their work on our class displays? We chose to celebrate our trip to London Wetlands with our Autumn displays.
We have thoroughly enjoyed Autumn 1 especially being able to invite you all in to share photos from our trip, to share our Harvest assembly and to share your children's reports at parent's evening. We look forward to Autumn 2 and the experiences it brings.
