Year Two - Rowan and Maple
Spring 1
So one week after most of the country, we are now at the end of Spring 1. We have had lots to celebrate over the last week, with Pancake Day, Valentines Day and the Chinese New Year.
This half term in English we wrote information texts about a woodland creature and then a poem based on ‘Into the Blue’ which uses lots of descriptive techniques like similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia and synonyms.
In Geography, we learnt all about Kenya and then produced an information leaflet using our English learning. This also helped us in Art when we looked at different African patterns and music when we played djembe drums.
Science was also used in a cross curricular way (Computing) when we learnt about different habitats such as woodland and then explored and took photos using iPads of the micro-habitats we’d see there. Sadly, the rain ruined our walk along the Nickey Line but we will hope to rearrange early in Spring 2.
Autumn 2
One term down, two to go!
In English, we have written diary entries from different versions of Rapunzel. We also used Samuel Pepys diary of the Great Fire of London to model diary writing whilst we learnt all about the who, what, where, when and why?
In Maths, we have developed our addition and subtraction strategies.
In Science, we looked at different materials and thought about their properties.
In music, we have been on a trip to the Barbican to listen to the London Symphony Orchestra with the story of ‘Dog’s don’t do ballet’ which we all enjoyed.
In RE we wrote our own version of the Nativity whilst we practiced for and then performed our ‘Don’t be Afraid’ nativity to our parents and carers.
Finally, we enjoyed the Christmas arts and crafts of Deco Days.
As you can read, we have been very busy. See you in 2024!
Autumn 1st Half
I can’t believe that we have had the first half term already!
In English, we have written stories based on ‘Frog and the Stranger’, written instructions based on the ‘Scaredy Squirrel’ series and written poems about Autumn.
In Maths, we have focused on number fluency to twenty, thinking about those pesky ‘ten and some more’ numbers, and realising that our number bonds to ten are so important when we ‘think ten’ in addition or subtraction.
In Science, we have thought about animals including humans and thought about the differences between our wants and our needs. Ask your children what the 4 basic needs of any animal are – and they will be able to answer that it is food, water, air and shelter.
All of the topics have been enjoyed but I think the children have enjoyed art most, with a focus on the exploration of colour, tone, shading and mixing.
Finally, we have had the cricket coach from Chance to Shine in and she has been impressed with the children’s throwing and catching skills in particular.
When the children come back from half term, we have a trip to the Barbican to listen to the London Symphony Orchestra and a Christmas production entitled ‘Don’t Be Afraid!’ to look forward to.
